OpenAI is rolling out faster responses to follow-up messages that change a Codex task’s direction in the ChatGPT desktop app. The update appears in the [October 8 release notes](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6825453-chatgpt-release-notes). Availability varies during the rollout.

## Steer the current task or prepare the next one

According to [OpenAI’s Codex guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11369540-using-codex-with-your-chatgpt-plan), a follow-up message can steer work in progress or wait in the queue for a new task.

In the desktop app, choose the behavior in **Settings → General → Follow-up behavior**. For example, a correction to work already underway belongs to the current task; a separate request can wait for the next one.

The announcement concerns how these messages are handled during a task. That release note provides no percentage improvement in model performance and no new benchmark.
