# Instagram hashtags: how to choose them for a post

> Choose hashtags that describe what is in your post. Learn Instagram’s current limit through a small-brand example.

An Instagram hashtag is a label that starts with `#` and groups posts around a topic. Choose one by looking at what someone can see or learn in your post, rather than copying a list that could fit any account.

Instagram lets you put hashtags in a caption or comments. Its [official hashtag help page](https://help.instagram.com/351460621611097/?cms_platform=iphone-app) says a post from a public account with hashtags may appear in the corresponding search results. That describes one possible discovery route.

## Choose tags that describe this post

Before writing, finish this sentence: “This post shows ___.” Then check whether each proposed tag names something that really appears, is explained or is demonstrated. A broad tag is not automatically useful. If it does not help someone understand the subject, leave it out.

Imagine a fictional sewing workshop in Valdivia. It posts a video showing a fabric bag made from offcuts left in the workshop. The copy reads:

> We made this bag from fabric offcuts left in the workshop. The video shows the pieces before sewing and the finished bag.
>
> `#FabricBags` · `#Sewing` · `#MadeInValdivia`

Each tag adds a detail the post supports: the object, the process or the workshop’s actual location. `#Travel` would be broad and would not describe the video.

Use the same check for each post. A tag that fits a product video may not fit a service answer, event or team introduction. If a post touches several subjects, choose the one it explains most clearly instead of trying to cover them all.

## How many hashtags can you add, and where?

Instagram’s Help Center page, checked on October 15, 2026, says you can use up to five tags on a post and notes that if you include more than five on a single photo or video, your comment will not post. It also allows them in the caption or a comment. The maximum is a documented limit, not a target. Use only tags that add context to the post.

The same page says numbers are allowed, but spaces and special characters such as `$` or `%` do not work in a hashtag. It also says you can tag your own posts, and posts from private profiles will not appear in public search results. The page checked is the iPhone-app help view and describes photo or video posts; do not assume these exact steps or limits apply to other formats without checking their documentation.

## Check each tag before you publish

Run through these questions:

1. **Does the post support the tag?** If someone taps it expecting that subject, will the post meet the expectation?
2. **Can the caption still be read naturally?** A string of mixed topics is usually harder to understand than a few precise tags.
3. **Does it still describe this post?** Check campaign names, event details and location before reusing an old tag.
4. **Would you include it without a promise of reach?** If it only sounds attractive because it is called “viral,” find a more accurate description.

## Hashtags and search phrases do different jobs

A hashtag names or groups a topic. Text in the video, image and caption can explain the full question someone wants answered. Do not turn a caption into a list of variations on the same word or expect a hashtag to replace the explanation.

If you are preparing a post to answer a search, the [Instagram and TikTok SEO guide](/en/guides/instagram-tiktok-search-optimization/) explains how to connect the question, text and caption. For this post, check separately that its hashtags describe what you actually published.
