# Cannot send direct messages on TikTok: what to check By HeyMark · Updated October 14, 2026 When a TikTok DM will not send or does not appear in your inbox, first check what kind of conversation you are trying to start. TikTok limits direct messaging to registered account holders aged 16 and older; Family Pairing can restrict the feature. The inbox also separates existing chats from requests. In the app, tap **Inbox** in the bottom bar and look for the name in your chat list. 2. Check message requests too. TikTok says that for people aged 18 and older, messages from mutual friends and accounts they follow may go straight to the inbox; messages from other potential connections and people may appear as requests. 3. If you message someone who does not follow you, you need to send a request and wait for them to accept. TikTok allows one pending request. If the recipient deletes it or does not respond, you cannot send another. Do not resend a request that is already pending or try to get around someone's privacy choice. If an expected chat is missing, check requests before concluding that the message disappeared. ## Check age, supervision, and privacy TikTok says direct messaging is available from age 16. For teens, defaults and controls can depend on age and Family Pairing. If the account holder is a minor, review those controls with their parent or guardian. Each account's messaging settings determine who can send a request. The recipient can choose **Don't receive**, and a block also prevents requests. Changing your preference to Don't receive does not by itself erase history or existing chats; TikTok says those conversations remain available unless you block the person. ### Fictional example A designer messages an account that does not follow them. The conversation does not appear as a regular chat because it is a request. First check Inbox for an existing pending request. If one was already sent, wait for the other account to decide. TikTok says a message that is flagged or reported, a temporarily restricted account, or a safety action can prevent sending or receiving. Read the notices and alerts in the account for the reason TikTok provides. Conditions can differ between accounts; this guide cannot confirm an individual account's status. If an existing chat is still visible but you cannot send, distinguish that from trouble finding a new request. If the recipient does not accept requests or has blocked you, respect that choice.
