Instagram broadcast channels: how to create and use one

8 min read
A message card connects to several smaller cards, with a reply nested beneath one of them.

An Instagram broadcast channel is a public space for sharing updates with people who choose to join. Creators and collaborators send messages, photos, videos or polls; members can react, reply and vote. Conversations can continue under a message without turning the channel into private customer support.

Start by asking what you would send next week and the week after. If you would only repeat every feed post, you do not yet have a reason to open another space. If you know the next update and who will review replies, you can decide what belongs in the channel and what needs another route.

Requirements and how to create a broadcast channel

Instagram’s current Help page says public accounts with more than 1,000 followers can start channels. It also warns that access is rolling out gradually: meeting that condition does not guarantee the option already appears on your account.

For the Android or iPhone app, the documented process is:

  1. Open Messages and select Compose at the top right.
  2. Select Create channel.
  3. Enter a name, choose the audience and review when the channel will end and whether to show it on your profile.
  4. Confirm with Create. Prepare your first message before sending it, because it triggers the invitation to your followers.

If the option is missing, check the conditions and availability in the current Help page. A gradual rollout can leave accounts without access; changing your account type or updating the app does not guarantee it will become available.

How to join a channel and receive updates

Broadcast channels are public and discoverable, but ongoing channel notifications go to people who join. Meta says the first message sends followers a one-time invitation; each person decides whether to join and can manage notifications or leave. A brand’s follower count is not its channel membership and does not guarantee that everyone sees an update. (Meta: Introducing Instagram Broadcast Channels, updated September 30, 2024.)

To join, open the invitation or channel link in the app and select Join. The channel is added to your inbox. Instagram Help on joining a channel explains that replies, reactions and poll votes are visible on Instagram, and other people can see whether you are a member. Keep that in mind before sharing personal information.

A Story can introduce the channel or show a visual sequence to people who follow the account. A channel carries updates for people who choose to join. A Story invitation can explain what they will receive; the channel can then share progress and a follow-up. If you need to plan that visual sequence, see our guide to Instagram Stories for business.

A sequence for announcing a weekend pastry box

Hypothetical example. A small bakery is preparing a pastry box for Saturday. The messages, poll result and order terms below are invented to show how to close the loop. A real brand should replace them with information it has confirmed.

The team plans to share a photo of the dough, ask which part of the process people want to see, then post the menu and current order terms. The poll will choose the next video topic; the menu is already set.

First message: say what people will receive

This channel is where we’ll share bakery updates: how we’re preparing the weekend box and when orders open. We’ll post when there’s something useful to share. If you have a question about an order, please use the private contact option on our page.

Wednesday: share a preview with context

We’re letting the dough rest for Saturday’s box. In today’s photo, you can see the layers before they go into the oven. Tomorrow, we’ll ask which part of the process you’d like to see in a short video.

Confirm the recipe and availability before announcing the box. The photo previews the preparation voters could see next; the menu is already confirmed.

Thursday: ask a focused question

What would you like to see tomorrow?

The poll offers two options: “How we roll and fold the dough” and “How the box looks fresh from the oven.” The team knows what it will do with the answer: make the video preferred by most of the people who vote in the channel. The question does not try to find out what the whole audience would buy, and it will not change the menu.

Friday: report what happened

The poll chooses the video topic. In this invented example, more voters choose the lamination process. The bakery films it and returns to the channel with the result:

Lamination won. Here’s how we fold the dough to make its layers. Saturday’s box already has a set menu; the poll helped us choose what to show you today.

The result represents people who voted in the channel. If the poll is inconclusive, the brand can choose a video it can make and explain that in the update.

Friday: share the details people need to decide

The menu for Saturday’s box is set: four pastries, for pickup between 9 am and noon. Orders close Friday at 6 pm. The price, ingredients and pickup terms are on the order page linked in our profile.

For a real post, the bakery must confirm every detail and update the destination before sending this message. If someone asks about an order, allergy or payment, continue by DM or through the private route listed on the order page. Our guide to handling customer service in comments and DMs explains how to resolve an individual enquiry from start to finish.

Friday, after 6 p.m.: close the loop

After the order deadline, the bakery posts a general update:

Orders for Saturday’s box are now closed. We’ll post here when orders open for the next weekend. If you placed an order and need help, use the private contact option on our page.

If the brand has no general update, it can wait before sending another message. Keeping a channel active does not mean posting for the sake of it.

Replies and DMs have different jobs

Instagram added replies and prompts to broadcast channels. When replies are on, member responses appear under the original message and other channel members can take part. Prompts accept text or photo responses for up to 24 hours. If a creator replies to a prompt response, Instagram shares that message in the main channel. Check which controls appear on your account before planning an interaction. (Meta: Get Closer to Your Community With Replies, Prompts and Insights, updated June 26, 2025.)

A question about what to serve with a pastry could work as a prompt if the bakery wants ideas everyone can read. A complaint, order number, address or payment detail needs an individual conversation. Even when it appears in the message inbox, a broadcast channel is public and discoverable; do not use it for confidential support.

Meta lists total interactions, Story shares and poll votes. These signals describe activity in the channel. To evaluate orders, review confirmed orders separately using the brand’s own data.

Before inviting people, write the first update and decide when you will send the next one. Also check that the linked page has current prices and terms, and that someone can handle private enquiries. If those two pieces are not ready, a post or Story may be enough for this announcement.
