Anthropic announced on October 18, 2026, the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund and proposed allocating 5% of its shares to it, subject to shareholder approval. According to the announcement, the board could allocate another 2% for each 50% increase in the company’s value above an established benchmark. (Anthropic)

How the fund is structured

Anthropic plans to organize the fund as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) organization. The company explains that this structure would let it vary the forms of giving. It also says the fund’s shares will not be used for lobbying or political contributions, inside or outside the United States. (Anthropic)

The proposed 5% allocation is pending shareholder approval. The possible additional percentage depends on valuation milestones: the announcement describes an increase of 2% for each 50% increase in the company’s value above the established benchmark. Anthropic does not present that additional percentage as an allocation that has already been made. (Anthropic)

Previous commitments and potential areas of focus

Anthropic says that, when this announcement is combined with previous commitments by founders and employees, approximately 20% of its shares would be dedicated to the public benefit, in addition to any future percentage tied to valuation milestones. The company also says that around half of its employees participate in a share-contribution program with company matching. (Anthropic)

Among the fund’s potential areas of focus, the company mentions AI’s effects on the labor market. Anthropic says it has already committed $200 million to study and address this issue. That previous commitment is separate from the new proposal to allocate shares to the fund. (Anthropic)
