Social media copywriting: give your words a clear job

Social media copywriting is writing that helps an audience understand a message and take a relevant action. It includes captions, carousel text, scripts and calls to action. Start by deciding what the person needs to know, what you can claim and what they should be able to do next.
A post can explain a product’s use, answer a question or introduce an offer. Evaluate its writing against that job: an attention-grabbing sentence does not establish clarity or sales performance.
Start with facts you can support
Gather the information that must remain consistent between versions: the offer, audience, inclusions, conditions, destination and sources. If a price or date is missing, leave it pending. Filling the gap with a plausible number turns a draft into inaccurate information.
Give the text one main job. “Explain what the class includes and how to book” guides an offer post. “Answer how to care for the item” guides educational content. A closing question can collect useful information, but it should relate to what you have just explained.
Use familiar words and sentences that identify who does what. Check the text in its intended format: a caption can complement an image, while a script needs to make sense when heard. Essential information should not depend on the reader guessing the context.
What each part of the text does
The opening identifies the subject or a recognisable situation. The body explains it and includes relevant conditions. The ending offers an action the reader can complete and the team is ready to handle. This structure is a review tool; it does not require three paragraphs in every post.
“Discover an unforgettable experience” leaves the reader unsure what they will receive. “Make your first ceramic mug in a beginners’ class” names an activity. If the remaining text explains duration, materials and booking, the person can assess the offer.
Avoid urgency, testimonials or outcomes you cannot substantiate. If a paid collaboration or commercial relationship requires disclosure, check the rules applicable to your market. For campaigns targeting the United States, the FTC explains how to disclose material connections on social media. That reference does not replace other countries’ requirements.
An offer with useful information
Marea Studio is a fictional ceramics workshop. In this exercise, it offers a two-hour beginners’ class, includes materials and firing, and confirms the date and price on its booking page. The responsible person reviews those conditions before publication.

Make your first mug in a beginners’ ceramics class. The session lasts two hours and includes materials and firing. Check the date and price on the booking page.
The edited version explains what happens and what is included. Its call to action leads to a destination that must show the advertised conditions. The text still needs a destination account, visual asset and business review; it is not a ready-to-publish offer for a real company.
Educational copy that complements the image
In a second post from the same exercise, the studio shows a matte-finish mug and answers a care question. For this example, assume the owner has confirmed handwashing with a soft sponge and avoiding abrasives. These instructions apply only to the fictional product; check your material’s care requirements before adapting them.
Care for your pieces with love so they last a lifetime.
For this matte-finish mug, we recommend handwashing with a soft sponge. Avoid abrasives. If you have a different item, check its care instructions before using the same method.
The image can show the texture or process while the caption preserves the instruction. Explain which item you are showing when conditions vary between products. That precision helps more than repeating adjectives about material quality.
Adapt to the reading context
Keep the facts consistent when changing formats. In a video, distribute the explanation across speech, visuals and on-screen text while keeping important conditions readable. A carousel can develop one part of the idea on each slide. In a caption, the opening gives context and the rest supplies the information needed.
Check how it looks on a phone and what happens when someone opens a link or follows the call to action. If you ask people to comment a keyword to receive information by message, prepare and test that response first. HeyMark offers keyword automations and content functions; configuration and destination need to match the promise.
No single length guarantees performance for every audience. Use the space the explanation needs and remove repetition. Hashtags, emojis and line breaks should serve reading or context; adding them does not establish a distribution improvement.
Review before judging results
The copy-review CSV records the objective, facts, source, draft, action and outstanding questions. It includes both fictional examples and a blank row for your brand. Use it in a spreadsheet; it does not connect automatically to the product.
| Question | What to look for | What to correct |
|---|---|---|
| Is the job clear? | The reader knows which activity, product or explanation they are seeing. | Replace vague phrases with relevant information. |
| Are the facts confirmed? | Conditions, materials, dates and links have sources. | Leave unverified facts pending. |
| Can the action be completed? | The destination works and the team can handle the response. | Change the instruction or prepare the destination before publishing. |
| Does it sound like the brand? | Vocabulary and tone match approved examples. | Edit using specific voice rules. |
| Can it be evaluated? | A measurement question and period are defined. | Choose the relevant signal before comparing versions. |

To compare two openings, also record format, audience, distribution and period. Two posts with different results do not prove that their wording caused the difference. Content testing explains how to organise that comparison, while KPIs by goal helps you choose what to observe.
Using AI to propose and review copy
Provide confirmed facts, approved voice examples and a clear task. Ask the assistant to flag missing data and explain differences between proposals. Mark can work with the brand context; Claude or ChatGPT can access it through the HeyMark MCP after connection and authorisation. Your team reviews claims before publication.
Request three drafts using confirmed facts
The definitions, edits and resources are HeyMark’s editorial work. Marea Studio and its conditions are fictional; the examples show no measured improvement and provide no care instructions for other products. The cover is an AI-generated illustration.

Keep the idea, review the draft with your team, and see how it performed in the accounts you connected.
