Cannot share an Instagram post to your story: what to check

By HeyMark · Updated

If you want to share someone else’s Feed post to your story but can’t find Add to story, first check whether the post can be reshared. This guide explains what depends on the person who posted it and what you can check on your account; Meta doesn’t make this feature available to everyone.

Check whether the post can be shared

Meta lists two conditions for sharing someone else’s Feed post to your story: their account must be public, and they must allow resharing of their posts. If either condition isn’t met, you can’t add that post to your story through the usual flow. Check Instagram’s official requirements.

The person who posted it can check the setting on their own public account: Profile → Menu → Sharing and reuse → Posts and reels to stories. That control belongs to the person who posted the content. You can’t change it from your account.

Share an eligible post

In the Instagram app for Android, iPhone, or iPad:

  1. Open the post in Feed.
  2. Tap Share below the photo or video.
  3. Tap Add to story.
  4. Tap Next, then Share.

The shared story keeps a reference to the original account and post. People who view it can see who posted it and open the original account.

If “Add to story” is missing

If the original account is public and allows resharing but the option still doesn’t appear, the feature may not be available to your account. Meta doesn’t document a setting you can turn on to force the feature to appear. You can share the post another way, but that won’t add it to your story.

This flow covers someone else’s Feed post. It doesn’t cover resharing another person’s story, restoring an archived story, or automatically sharing your own posts to Facebook.
