Instagram Reel blurry after upload: what to check
By HeyMark · Updated
If your Reel looked sharp in the exported file but lost detail after posting, compare the same moment in both versions first. Then check its dimensions, frame rate, and upload quality setting to see what you can adjust.
You need access to the account that posted the Reel and the exported file you uploaded. Keep that file for comparison; the highest-quality setting cannot restore detail to a Reel that is already posted.
Compare the file with the published Reel
Open the exported file on your phone and find the part that looks blurry on Instagram. Compare the same scene in the published Reel. Check whether the detail is already missing from the file or whether the difference appears after upload.
If the local file is already pixelated, review the project and export before changing Instagram settings. If the file looks clear, continue with the requirements and upload setting.
Check the frame size and frame rate
Instagram says a Reel can have an aspect ratio from 1.91:1 to 9:16, with a minimum of 30 FPS and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels. These are published technical requirements, not a promise that the video will retain every detail from the original. Review Instagram’s Reel requirements.
Check the exported file’s details for its aspect ratio, resolution, and frame rate. If it falls below those minimums, export again from your project at a compatible size and compare the new file before uploading it.
Turn on highest-quality uploads
In the Instagram app:
- Go to your profile and tap Menu.
- Under Your app and media, tap Media quality.
- Turn on Upload at highest quality.
Instagram notes that uploading higher-quality Reels may take longer. The setting name or location may vary by app version. Instagram Help describes this setting and its path.
Use this setting when preparing your next Reel. After posting, compare the same scene with the file you uploaded to check the result. Turning it on now does not change the earlier post.
If the Reel still looks blurry
If the file meets the minimums and highest-quality uploads are on, but the Reel still loses detail, keep the original file and a screenshot of the result. Check whether the issue remains when you reopen the post, then use Instagram Help from your account to report it.
If the file already looked blurry before upload, correct the export in your project. If only the published Reel looks different and the settings are on, these settings do not guarantee that you can restore detail to the processed video.
