On November 4, Google announced the start of its rollout of direct payments with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for shoppers in Canada in Google Search AI Mode and the Gemini app. The announcement for Canada, authored by Sabrina Geremia, Vice President and Country Managing Director, Google Canada, lists lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Simons as eligible merchants.

How shopping works

UCP is an open standard that establishes a common language among AI agents, commerce systems, and payment providers during product discovery, checkout, and post-purchase support. It aims to replace bespoke connections between each agent and each system.

Shoppers can pay directly with Google Pay using payment methods and shipping information saved in Google Wallet. The merchant remains the seller of record and can customize its integration. The rollout begins with eligible merchants.

Planned upcoming features

Google plans to work with merchants in the coming months to add loyalty rewards. Starting in 2027, it also plans to expand access through a simplified UCP integration in Merchant Center, where merchants will be able to enable direct payments and other features in Gemini and AI Mode. (blog.google)
