OpenAI announced Images 2.6 on November 4 for ChatGPT, Codex, and its API. The update combines image generation, more controllable editing, and GIF creation. As examples of how it can be used, the company suggests animating a brand mascot, turning a product photo into an animated loop, and preparing animated storyboards, sequences that let people explore movement before producing a video. Speed and control for edits

According to OpenAI, Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than the previous version. In the API, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare prioritizes speed and can generate an image in as little as six seconds at low quality. Sunburst prioritizes detail and consistency across edits at medium or high quality. OpenAI

The API distinguishes quality, which regulates detail and visual fidelity, from complexity, which determines how much the model plans. OpenAI recommends low complexity for simple edits and medium or high complexity for scenes with many elements or constraints. It also adds image markup, marks on the image that indicate changes, and SVG export, a vector format. OpenAI

Safety and availability

The system card, a document describing Images 2.6’s evaluations and safety measures, explains the checks performed before and after generation. The system reviews whether a request complies with policies, analyzes the input text and images, and checks the final image before showing it. Safety document

In an automated evaluation with 3,077 requests designed to elicit violations, Flare 2.6 produced safe generations in 75.04% of cases. Blocked unsafe generations accounted for 22.81% of the total evaluated, and unblocked unsafe generations accounted for 2.14%. All three percentages refer to the entire test set, not to a proportion calculated only from unsafe images or to rates observed in real-world traffic. Images 2.6 System Card

Images 2.6 is available worldwide in ChatGPT and Codex, across all subscription tiers and on web, desktop, and mobile. Flare and Sunburst are available in the API; the announcement links to their pricing. OpenAI
