Buffer alternatives in 2026: when scheduling isn't enough

Buffer is simple, has a free plan and charges about $6 USD a month per channel, so for a few networks it's hard to beat. Look at alternatives when you need comments answered (Buffer suggests replies, HeyMark replies with AI and your approval), when you manage many brands (Metricool) or when your work revolves around Instagram (Later). Hootsuite is the big-suite option, from $99 USD a month per user.

If you’re looking at Buffer alternatives, it’s probably not because Buffer schedules badly. It has a free plan, charges about $6 USD a month per channel, and is one of the simplest ways to schedule posts. The reasons to look elsewhere tend to show up later: comments someone has to answer, a team that signs off before anything goes live, or several paid tools for a single account. We compare four alternatives using data checked on September 25, 2026, and tell you when it makes sense to stay on Buffer.

Three reasons to look for Buffer alternatives

Comments need answers, not just suggestions

A clothing store posts a carousel of its new collection, and an hour later it has 40 comments: compliments, questions about sizes, and a complaint about a delivery. Buffer suggests AI replies that learn your voice, inside its Community feature; the free plan gets 5 suggestions a week. A suggestion saves you the writing, but you still review and send it yourself. HeyMark replies to comments and DMs with AI in your brand’s voice, with your approval, and hands off to a person whatever needs one, like that complaint. Here’s how AI comment replies work.

If some of those comments are spam or insults, HeyMark moderates them too: they go into review, get hidden or shown, and deleting them from the platform needs your approval. More in comment moderation. Metricool’s inbox, by contrast, can’t hide or delete comments (on TikTok, its Flows feature does hide comments with banned words).

Your team signs off before posting

In HeyMark, the approval link comes with every plan, and Company includes 5 people with access by area. In Metricool, team members and approvals start on Advanced, from $53 USD a month billed yearly. In Later, Starter includes 1 user, Growth 2 and Scale 4. For Buffer, we couldn’t find verified public data on teams and approvals as of September 2026, so we don’t compare it here: if this is your main criterion, check it directly with Buffer.

You want everything in one place

Scheduling, replying, automating and reporting in one subscription. HeyMark pulls what you’ve already posted onto the calendar (including anything a teammate posts straight from Instagram), gathers comments and DMs in one inbox, includes keyword automations and analytics with monthly reports, and connects to Claude or ChatGPT over MCP.

You connect each network on the My accounts screen, and what you already posted shows up in the calendar.

Quick comparison

HeyMark comes first because it’s the tool we make. Hootsuite’s details are further down.

What the same account costs on each

The clothing store from the example posts to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn, and one person runs it:

Tool What you pay each month Where it comes from
Buffer About $24 USD 4 channels at about $6 each
Metricool $20 USD billed yearly ($25 month to month) Starter, since the free plan doesn’t include LinkedIn. Covers up to 5 brands
Later From $18.75 USD billed yearly Starter: 1 social set of 8 profiles and 1 user. Check which networks it includes
Hootsuite One $99 USD license Standard, per user
HeyMark $12 USD month to month ($10 billed yearly) Creator: 1 brand with one account per network, and 1 person

With one person and four networks, HeyMark is the cheapest paid option in the table, with Later and Metricool close behind. If the store adds two people to the team, the math changes: Metricool needs Advanced (from $53 USD a month billed yearly), Later needs Scale ($82.50, 4 users), Hootsuite becomes three $99 licenses, and HeyMark needs Company ($30 a month, 5 people).

The Buffer alternatives, one by one

HeyMark: when comments are part of the job too

HeyMark publishes and schedules to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube: Reels, stories, carousels, videos, Shorts and LinkedIn documents. It shows you each network’s limits before you write too much, and it duplicates an Instagram post for TikTok without re-uploading the file. On top of that, Mark replies to comments and DMs, and keyword automations come with every plan without using credits.

It doesn’t charge per channel: each brand includes one account per network, which is why the store in the table fits on Creator. Company is $30 USD a month with 3 brands and 5 people. More in scheduling social media posts.

What it doesn’t have: a free plan (there’s a 14-day trial), or posting to X, Threads, Bluesky, Pinterest or Google Business Profile. If Buffer’s free plan covers you, that’s cheaper than any HeyMark plan.

Metricool: when you manage many brands

It charges by brand, not by channel: Starter costs $20 USD a month billed yearly ($25 month to month) for 5 brands. It has a free plan (1 brand, 20 posts a month, 30 days of analytics, no LinkedIn or X). It’s strong on analytics, reports, competitor tracking and ads, and covers 11 networks; X costs extra, at $10 a month per account. It doesn’t document AI replies in its inbox: its Flows feature answers keywords with up to 3 fixed texts on Instagram and TikTok. Its MCP is free on every plan, with 27 documented tools, 2 of which write. We run the numbers against Buffer in Metricool vs Buffer.

Later: when your work revolves around Instagram

Later focuses on Instagram, influencers and link in bio. Starter costs from $18.75 USD a month billed yearly, with one social set of 8 profiles and 1 user; Growth is $37.50 (2 users) and Scale $82.50 (4 users). There’s no free plan, but there is a 14-day trial. Its AI writes captions and ideas; its documentation shows no AI replies to comments or DMs, and we found no first-party MCP server.

Hootsuite: when you need a suite with social listening

It charges per user: Standard from $99 USD a month, Professional $199 and Advanced $399. There’s no free plan. It’s strong on social listening, offers AI-assisted replies in its inbox, and automates replies from Professional up. It has had 4 MCP servers since June 2026. Coming from Buffer, it’s a big jump in price that makes more sense if you’ll actually use the listening. We compare it in depth in Hootsuite alternatives.

When to stay on Buffer

  • You run a few channels and scheduling is what you need.
  • The free plan covers you.
  • You post to X, Threads or Bluesky.
  • You’re a developer and want an API and MCP on every plan.
  • You’d rather write each reply yourself, with an AI suggestion at hand.
