Instagram comment auto reply, written by AI in your brand's voice

There are two ways: keyword rules that send fixed text, or replies the AI writes for each comment in your brand's voice. HeyMark does both. Keyword rules spend no credits, each AI reply uses 1, and sensitive conversations go to a person.

It’s 11:40 p.m. and someone asks under your latest reel whether the chocolate cake comes gluten free. If nobody answers until tomorrow, that sale goes cold. There are two ways to set up an Instagram comment auto reply: a rule that always sends the same text when a keyword shows up, or an AI that reads the comment and replies in your brand’s voice. HeyMark does both. This page covers when to use each one, and when it’s better not to auto reply at all.

Two kinds of Instagram comment auto reply

Fixed keyword replies. You set the word (“price”, “menu”, “link”) and the text. They’re predictable, spend no credits and come with every plan. They work when you know what people will ask and what you’ll answer, as with Instagram DM automation.

Generative AI replies. This is what people mean by an AI reply to comments: the AI reads each comment and writes a new answer in your brand’s voice, learned from what you’ve already published. It covers what you can’t predict: the gluten question, the “do you ship to other cities?”, the compliment that deserves more than “thanks”. Each reply uses 1 credit.

What we recommend is using both: rules for your campaign promises, AI for the everyday conversation.

What a good reply looks like

A bakery gets this comment on its reel: “Can I order the chocolate cake gluten free? My daughter has celiac disease.”

In the brand's voice
“Yes, we make it gluten free to order, with 48 hours’ notice. Our kitchen also uses wheat flour, so send us a DM and we’ll walk you through how we prepare it, so you can decide with peace of mind.”
Generic bot reply
“Thanks for your comment. DM us for more info.”

The first one answers the question, gives a concrete detail, doesn’t promise what the bakery can’t guarantee, and offers a next step. The second could sit under any comment on any brand’s post.

To answer like the first one, the AI has to know what your brand knows. It learns the voice from your posts. Details that aren’t in them, like lead times, prices or shipping policies, are worth adding to the brand profile so it doesn’t have to guess.

Approval and handoff to a person

Auto replying doesn’t mean replying without control. In HeyMark:

  • You pause the AI in a conversation when you want to answer yourself, and resume it when you’re done.
  • What needs a person gets escalated. The conversation goes on the escalation list for human attention, and whoever resolves it decides how it continues.
  • From your assistant, nothing goes out without a preview. If you ask Claude or ChatGPT to reply to a comment, it shows you the text and waits for your approval before posting it.
  • Moderation is separate. Comments you chose to moderate are hidden or held for review, and deleting one from the platform requires your approval. More in comment moderation.

When not to auto reply

However good an automatic reply is, it makes these worse:

  • Complaints. An order that arrived wrong needs someone who can fix it, not a well-written apology.
  • Legal or health questions. A wrong answer about an allergen, a treatment or a contract has consequences.
  • A crisis. If a post went viral for the wrong reason, every automatic reply adds fuel to the fire.
  • Details that change daily. Stock, today’s prices, holiday hours.

In those cases, let the conversation escalate to your team, pause the AI where needed and, if the crisis is big, pause your automations too. Escalations and pauses are handled from the unified social inbox or from your assistant.

How many credits it uses

Each AI reply or DM uses 1 credit. Keyword rules use none.

Plan AI credits a month What that covers
Creator, $12 USD a month 500 500 AI replies, or 400 if you also use 10 Mark turns
Company, $30 USD a month 3,000 3,000 AI replies
Platform, quoted 25,000 Unlimited comment replies

Each Mark turn uses 10 credits. If you run short, you can turn on extra credits at $0.01 USD each; they’re off by default.

How to get started

  1. Connect your Instagram account and any others you use. HeyMark pulls in what you’ve published, and Mark learns your voice from it.
  2. Add what the AI can’t guess to the brand profile: lead times, prices, policies.
  3. Turn on AI replies and review the first ones in the inbox.
  4. Set keyword rules for the fixed promises in your campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Can you auto reply to Instagram comments?

Yes, with a tool connected to your account. In HeyMark you can use keyword rules, which spend no credits, or replies the AI writes for each comment.

Can I review the AI reply before it's posted?

Yes. If you reply from Claude or ChatGPT, every reply on the platform goes through a preview you approve. In the inbox you can pause the AI in any conversation and write it yourself.

Will AI replies sound like a bot?

They sound like your brand to the extent your posts sound like you, because that's where the voice comes from. If something doesn't fit, you can save the correction to the brand profile.

How much does it cost to reply to comments with AI?

1 credit per reply. Creator includes 500 credits a month for $12 USD, Company 3,000 for $30 USD, and Platform has unlimited comment replies.

Is there a free option?

HeyMark has no free plan, but every plan comes with a 14-day trial. Buffer's free plan suggests 5 AI replies a week (as of September 2026).

Which comments shouldn't an AI answer?

Complaints, legal or health questions and anything in the middle of a crisis. Those conversations are better escalated to a person on your team.
