TikTok auto reply: automate comments and DMs within TikTok's rules

By HeyMark · Updated

If your online clothing store posts a video of its new collection and gets 60 comments asking about price or sizes, TikTok’s built-in auto replies won’t handle them: they answer direct messages, not comments, and only some accounts have them. Here’s what TikTok auto reply covers on its own, what TikTok lets connected tools do, and how to set up comment replies and TikTok DM automation in HeyMark that work within those rules.

What auto messages TikTok has built in

TikTok has four, which you set up in the app or in Business Center. This is what its Business Help Center says (updated May 2026):

Auto message What it does Limit
Welcome message Greets people the first time they open a chat with you 250 characters
Keyword reply Answers when a message contains an exact match of one of your keywords 40 characters per keyword, 500 per reply
Suggested questions Shows FAQs people tap to see the answer 80 characters per question, 200 per answer
Chat prompts Shows topic buttons to start the conversation Not stated in the Help Center

All four are for direct messages; none of them replies to comments. And they come with conditions:

  • Only accounts with Advanced Access or Verified Business Accounts. General accounts don’t get them. You get Advanced Access by linking your account to a TikTok for Business account or a Business Center.
  • You have to accept messages from everyone, a setting under Settings and privacy.
  • TikTok reviews them before they go live, within 1 to 5 business days, and every edit goes back to review.

Verified Business Accounts also get Message Assistant (formerly Lead Genie), an AI chatbot that answers DMs from a knowledge base you provide. As of September 2026 it’s in testing with a limited number of accounts in 12 countries, including the US and Canada; none in Latin America, and not in the UK or the EU.

What TikTok lets connected tools do

If you use a connected tool to answer DMs, check TikTok’s rules separately from the features your integration supports. TikTok’s Business Messaging API documentation, read on October 15, 2026, sets these conditions:

  • Business accounts only. A personal account can’t connect its DMs, though you can switch it to a business account in the app settings.
  • In the standard flow, the other person starts the conversation. TikTok prohibits starting a conversation through that flow. If you aren’t mutual followers, after their first message you can send up to 10 in 48 hours; each reply from them opens another 48 hours with no cap, and after 48 hours of silence you can send up to 3 additional messages. These are the API’s messaging limits.
  • Comment-to-Message is a limited exception. TikTok can identify high-intent comments and allow private replies for eligible accounts registered in Vietnam, Indonesia or Thailand. The commenter’s account must be registered in APAC, LATAM or METAP. Age, access and messaging-permission requirements also apply; turning on a keyword rule is not enough. This API capability does not establish that HeyMark has integrated it.
The EEA, Switzerland and the UK

No connected tool can read or send DMs for business accounts registered in those regions, and DMs sent from accounts there don’t come through the API either. What counts is where the account signed up on TikTok, not where your business operates. In the US, TikTok requires each integration to pass an extra data security review; everywhere else, availability depends on TikTok’s rules for each account type and region. Before a campaign, test the DM rule from a second account.

If you can’t send or receive direct messages even in the app, check age, privacy, message requests and account restrictions. That diagnosis is separate from setting up an auto reply.

What HeyMark adds on TikTok

HeyMark puts what TikTok lets you automate from outside the app in one place, comments included. Keyword rules come with every plan and use no credits.

DM rule

When someone sends you a keyword by direct message, they get your automatic reply. It’s the automation that fits TikTok best, because the person writes first. Each rule takes up to 20 keywords and a DM of up to 1,000 characters, and it works the same way on Instagram and Facebook.

Comment rule

When someone comments a keyword, HeyMark replies publicly, on one video or across your brand. To deliver something by DM, combine that public reply with a rule that responds when the person messages you first, as in the example below. If the rule comes late, HeyMark shows you which earlier comments it covers and processes them only after you approve.

Automation on a single video

On a specific video, the automation triggers on a keyword or on any comment. In rules mode you write up to 10 public reply variants that rotate, so the same text doesn’t repeat under every comment. In AI mode, the AI writes each reply from your instructions and what you tell it about your business. Before launching the campaign, use a second account to check that the example’s public reply and DM rule work.

The inbox

TikTok comments and DMs land in the same inbox as your other networks. Mark replies with AI in your brand’s voice, and each reply uses 1 credit. You pause the AI in any conversation, and anything that needs a person gets handed off to your team. More in the unified social inbox.

An example that works within TikTok’s rules

The clothing store from the start wants to send its size guide. This workflow does not depend on Comment-to-Message: it asks people to message first.

Step Where What happens
1 Video caption “Not sure about your size? DM us SIZES and we’ll send you the guide.”
2 Comment rule on that video, with size, sizes and guide Replies publicly: “We’ll send it by DM: message us SIZES.”
3 DM rule with sizes, size and guide Answers with the guide and a link to the store. Since the person wrote first, TikTok allows the reply.
4 Inbox If they then ask “do you ship to other cities?”, the AI answers in the brand’s voice, or someone on the team does.

Nobody is left without an answer, and no message depends on writing to someone first. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT connected to HeyMark to set up both rules:

The example's rules, for TikTok
Use HeyMark with the brand brand name and work on its TikTok.
1. Create a DM rule: if someone sends me SIZES, SIZE or GUIDE by direct message, reply with this text: size guide and store link.
2. On the video video title, add an automatic public reply to comments that say size, sizes or guide: "We'll send it by DM: message us SIZES." That rule sends no DM.
Show me both automations before turning them on.

Before any automation goes live, your assistant shows you a preview. How to connect it is on the TikTok MCP server page.

HeyMark, ManyChat or Metricool for TikTok

TikTok’s messaging rules apply to every tool connected through its API. What changes is what each one does around them.

  • ManyChat works with Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and TikTok and charges by active contacts. It wins if you need WhatsApp or complex chatbot flows. It doesn’t schedule posts. We compare it in depth in ManyChat alternatives.
  • Metricool Flows replies by keyword with up to 3 fixed texts, with no AI, on Instagram and TikTok. Its inbox brings in TikTok comments but not TikTok DMs (per its Help Center, verified September 25, 2026). It’s a fit if you already use Metricool for its analytics or its other networks.
  • HeyMark includes the rules on every plan, next to the AI inbox and the scheduling of your videos, in the same tool.

When another option fits better

  • You only want a greeting or FAQs in your DMs. If your account has Advanced Access, TikTok’s built-in auto messages are free and live in the app.
  • Your account is registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. No connected tool can automate your TikTok DMs.
  • Your business runs on WhatsApp, or you need flows with many branches. ManyChat does more there.
  • You need something free. HeyMark has no free plan: every plan starts with a 7-day trial, and Creator costs $12 USD a month.

How to get started

  1. Connect your TikTok account

On the My accounts screen, inside your brand. To automate DMs, TikTok requires a business account.

  2. Create the DM rule

With the keywords you’ll ask for in your videos and the reply, plus a link if you need one.

  3. Add the comment reply

On the campaign video or across the brand, with the words people actually type: singular and plural, and common misspellings.

  4. Test it from a second account

Send the keyword by DM and comment it on the video. Check that the replies arrive before the campaign goes live.

Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok have DM automation?

Yes, in the app and only for direct messages: a welcome message, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts. General accounts don't get them; you need Advanced Access or a Verified Business Account.

Can you auto reply to TikTok comments?

Not with TikTok's built-in tools, which only cover DMs. With HeyMark you reply publicly to anyone who comments a keyword, with rotating text or AI-written replies, and keyword rules use no credits.

Why is TikTok auto reply not working?

In the app, it's usually the account type, the setting that lets everyone message you, or a message still under review, which can take up to 5 business days. Through a connected tool, check that it's a business account, that it isn't registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, and that the person messaged you first.

Can I DM everyone who comments on my TikTok?

For this tutorial's HeyMark workflow, ask commenters to message you first. TikTok has a Comment-to-Message exception for eligible accounts registered in Vietnam, Indonesia or Thailand and high-intent comments, with further access and regional requirements. We do not assume that feature is available in HeyMark.

Is TikTok DM automation allowed?

Yes, through TikTok's official Business Messaging API: for business accounts, replying to people who messaged first, within TikTok's messaging limits. It isn't available for business accounts registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.

Do ManyChat or Metricool work with TikTok?

ManyChat works with TikTok and charges by active contacts, from $14 USD a month billed yearly. Metricool Flows replies to comments by keyword with up to 3 fixed texts (as of September 2026). TikTok's messaging rules are the same for all of them.
