Fix YouTube captions and check their timing
By HeyMark · Updated
If your captions have errors or appear at the wrong time, first identify what you need to fix: the transcript, a timing offset, or text burned into the picture. In YouTube Studio, you can change both the text and timing of a caption track.
If there is no automatic track to edit, start with what to check when YouTube does not generate captions and how to add your own track.
Edit a track in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in with an account that can edit the video.
- Select Subtitles in the menu and open the video.
- Next to the language you want to correct, select Edit.
- If the track was generated automatically, choose Duplicate and edit, then continue with the draft. This keeps the automatic track while you work.
- Select a line, correct what was said, and check the beginning and end of the segment.
- When you finish, select Publish. The revised track becomes available as the new version. YouTube documents this process for text edits and automatic captions.
Check proper names, negations, numbers, and industry terms against the audio. Do not fill an inaudible word from context. If the sound does not confirm it, keep only what you can understand and decide whether you need a reviewed transcript.
Adjust timing when captions lead or lag
In the same editor, select a line and change its two time fields. If you do not see timestamps, turn on Edit timings. Publish after the dialogue and captions line up.
For many lines, you can download a caption file from Options → Download subtitles, edit it in a text editor, and upload the track again. Keep a local copy before editing. YouTube also documents adding or uploading timed files and auto-syncing a transcript in the language spoken. Auto-sync can take a few minutes and is not recommended for videos over an hour or with poor audio. See YouTube’s options for adding subtitles and captions.
Fictional example
Imagine a bakery video says “sourdough” while the automatic track displays the word half a second later. First confirm the wording. Then move the line’s start earlier and make sure it does not appear before the speaker begins.
Check the change
Play the track from the start, check a point in the middle, and jump near the end. Look for gaps between lines, names, numbers, and text that stays on screen long enough to read. If you edited a downloaded file, upload the final version, reopen the track in Studio, and confirm the new timing appears.
This process edits selectable captions in the player. If text is drawn into the video pixels, YouTube cannot edit it as a track. Correct the original project. YouTube cannot replace the uploaded file while keeping its URL: a new upload gets a new address. Check where you shared the link before deciding what to do with the earlier version. YouTube explains modifying versus replacing a video. If the video has multiple language tracks, review each one separately.
Before publishing, play the video and check that the words match the audio, each line starts and ends with the dialogue, no accidental blank lines remain, and you have selected the intended track. If someone else prepares captions, the Subtitle Editor role can add, edit, publish, and delete subtitles on eligible videos without uploading videos or changing other channel details. Review YouTube channel permissions before assigning access.
Frequently asked questions
Can I edit YouTube automatic captions?
Yes. In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, and select Edit for the language. YouTube says editing automatic captions creates a new track with your revisions.
Are edited captions burned into the video?
No. A caption track can be turned on or off in the player. Text burned into the picture requires correcting the original file; a new upload gets a new URL.
How do I fix caption timing?
Edit each line's timestamps in the caption editor, or download the track, edit it, and upload it again. Check lines near the start, middle, and end.
